The name Shih Tzu in Chinese means "Lion Dog", but because the hair around the face grows in all directions, the breed is sometimes called "chrysanthemum-faced dog." Believed to have originated in Tibet, the breed made its way to China in the 16 th century as gifts to the Manchu Dynasty. Since its noble beginnings, the Shih Tzu has been valued worldwide for its energetic, independent, and often amusing character. Officially recognized as a breed in the U.S. in 1969, the Shih Tzu ranges in size from 8 to 11 inches in height and may weigh between 9 to 16 pounds.
